PREMISE: As much as I enjoy hentai, I don’t understand a word of Japanese. To make matters worse, this movie has no subtitles. It seemed Filmco has left us on our own, trying to decipher what the hell is happening. Even a little research gave precious snippets of info about this movie, but enough to give me a basic idea of how to appreciate this diamond in the rough. “Be My Honey” is composed of two features: one is actually an episode from a series “Nonomura Ami” and another; I have yet to find its origins. If you’re adventurous enough, you can decipher the first story, without having to understand a single word! The second feature, however, is another matter entirely.

PRODUCTION NOTES: Despite the masterful skill used in producing these shorts, its age glaringly shows. In an age where prudence and grace are prime commodities of the past, this movie seems out of place in the overtly sexual, tentacled world of present hentai. But as part of Japanese history, this is a great way for people to know what kind of porn was available two decades ago.

EPISODE 1: I made some superficial background search on this hentai. This short was part of a popular and widespread omnibus video series of adult animation in Japan called “Cream Lemon”. Presented as a serial, this was under the series title “Nonomura Ami”. Now, as I was comparing the description of the hentai, I noticed that the present packaging described the story as a budding love affair between two high school friends. But on the original, the characters here are actually siblings! This was what I thought all along. An older brother, Hitoshi, and his young sister, Ami, all in their early teens, harbor a disturbing secret. They don’t know it but they lust after each other. They make side-glances at one another, pining away in the comfort of their rooms. But with their hormones raging and getting too unmanageable, until when can they resist temptation? In this case, you’ll know soon enough as we get into a mildly cringe-inducing sex scene that will get the ball rolling. Before I sound like a trashy romance writer, there are lots to be had in this movie. The tone is sober, if not dramatic, as if you’re watching a soap opera. But the sexual bits can be amusing. Ami’s boobs accidentally fly out along with frontal nudity of an under-aged girl. She also frequently masturbates. When the sex scene comes, I am satisfied with how it well plotted. I enjoy the way the animators drew the scenes in dramatic ways to highlight sexual positions and even, the exuberance of orgasm. I find it funny though that spheres of light cover the privates. Do the animators try to make it look as if genitalia are otherworldly parts of a person's body? The last half is a fun exploration of sex. See brother eat sister’s pussy. See a saliva trail look like white paint on the girl’s skin. See Hitoshi’s dick shine like the heavenly host! Besides the oral, we are also treated to an animated version of the missionary and cowgirl. It ends abruptly when the mother arrives and making a racket.

Episode 2: This second episode is less coherent than the first one. But its best suit comes from its topnotch animation. The quality of the artwork outshines “Nonomura Ami”. Linear, ornate, sinuous and very much like those ancient Japanese lithographs we see on museums, it appeals to the Zen persuasion. Moreover, this vignette has a formal theatrical feel to it, but has a trippy side. Though I can hardly follow the story, it’s about a feudal lord trying to woo the love of a geisha thru a greasy middleman. If you’re familiar with the live action Chinese movie “Sex and Zen”, then this is a close approximation. This movie is filled with Rorschach tests of erotic imagery that seem to communicate with our subconscious! Unfortunately, the sex scenes are tastefully done. When we are so used to movies that leave nothing to the imagination, we might grudgingly start filling in the blanks on this one. More artsy-fartsy than real porn, the sex scenes are far between and are gracefully framed: a foot clenching its toes in ecstasy, a throbbing flower, a quickie with both partners’ clothes on. With just one breast exposed, you’re inner perv would probably cry in disbelief for this one. Watch this movie with an open mind and you might enjoy it
